12.9 million People still lack access to essential healthcare in East-Congo, most of them are women and children (UNOCHA 2025 Report).

The ongoing and persistent armed conflicts in Goma, North-Kivu, in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have led to massive population displacements, causing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Since January 2025, more than 2 million people have fled, making a total of nearly 8 million of internally displaced people (IDPs) who have been forced to flee, mostly women, children, and adolescents, leaving everything behind and sometimes returning from host areas to their devastated villages, awaiting the next attacks to flee again.

12.9 million People still lack access to essential healthcare in East-Congo, most of them are women and children (UNOCHA 2025 Report). Essential healthcare is becoming inaccessible in several areas in the Eastern Congo, with ever-increasing demand for essential services and care exceeding the capacity and service packages of many health facilities, leaving the healthcare needs of thousands of women and children largely unmet. Some of these facilities have begun charging for their services due to the withdrawal of support from certain NGOs after cuts. As a result, most of those affected are foregoing services where fees have been waived, preferring to resort to alternative practices such as traditional medicine, self-medication, or purchasing medications from pharmacies where most of seller are unqualified (non-pharmacists, non-medical professionals), putting in danger thousands of women and children, with the risk of new epidemics. This has not only major consequences on their health status, but also on their socio-economic conditions and their resilience capacity, exposing them to increased vulnerability to disease and more extreme poverty.

A Hybrid Primary Care Mobile Clinic « ALLO MUNGANGA! » for an emergency response to the health crisis.

In response to this health crisis, the organization Avenir Mere – Enfant (AMEN) is launching an Hybrid Primary Care Mobile Clinic, the « ALLO MUNGANGA! », which is patient-centered approach, combining on-site healthcare intervention with remote medical support through telemedicine to strengthen to enhance healthcare access to internally displaced people, especially to women, children and adolescents affected by the ongoing complex humanitarian crisis in Goma. By combining these two approaches, it is possible to (i) prevent, screen for, and treat diseases at an early stage; and (ii) monitor treated patients with chronic illnesses to detect any potential complications. (iii) to offer appropriate medical guidance, as well as medical advice or health education to promote their health; (iv) to discourage the use of harmful practices, the misuse of medications/antibiotics through self-medication, or prescriptions from unqualified individuals selling medications in pharmacies.

To test the effectiveness, reliability, and acceptability of this hybrid intervention, a pilot phase is needed. This consists of up to 1,000 consultations over three months, targeting affected populations living in Karisimbi health zone, in Goma, from November 2025 to January 2026 (subject to available funding).

The organization AMEN will provide mobile phones, SIM cards, professional headsets, online messaging software, and a fully functional electronic medical record system accessible both online and offline.
